Lekie Filles crowned Guinness Super League champions.

Lekie Filles Football Club has emerged winners of the 2022/2023 women's topflight championship, dubbed Guinness Super League.

The Yaounde-based team clinched the title on Saturday May 27, after thrashing Authentic of Douala 6-2 on match day 19 of the competition. 

The match was played at the Annex of the Japoma Stadium in Douala. The win saw the girls of coach Ndzana Stephan extending their points count to 50 in 19 matches this season.

With barely three match days to the end of the season, Lekie Filles sit 9 points ahead of second-placed Éclair Football Filles.

Despite the fact that Éclair could still win their last three matches and in case Lekie doesn’t pick up even a point in their remaining games of the season, the latter has been handed the trophy given their superior advantage over the former on head to head basis. 

The new champions recorded a combined 5-4 win over Éclair this season in two meetings between both clubs this season. 

Lekie Filles humbled Éclair 4-2 in round one of the current campaign and lost to return fixture on a 1-2 score. 

In 19 matches played this far, Lekie Filles won 16, drew two and lost one.

Their lone defeat was on match day 13 of the league when they were humbled by their immediate rivals, Éclair of Sa’a.

The league trophy is the first of the Centrer Region club since the brewery company, Guinness Cameroun took over sponsorship of the championship. 

The first two editions of the Guinness Super League were won by Awa Football Club in 2021 and 2022.

 

Brenda Tabe, Tantoh get more crowns

Besides Lekie Filles’ triumph in the Guinness Super League this season, two of its players, Tabe Brenda and Tantoh Melvis added more crowns to their football careers in the country’s women’s domestic league.

 Saturday’s win for the Lekie club was the fourth league title for forward, Tabe Brenda in the Cameroon women’s topflight.

 The 19-year-old won her first league title with Lekie Filles in 217. She went on to win a double in 2021 and 2022 with Awa FC of Yaounde, before the recent one, making it four.

With the four league titles, the native of Manyu Division in the South West Region stands out as the most decorated player in the women's topflight championship campaign. In the run up to Lekie Filles crowning this season, the forward netted 12 times and is still hopeful find the back of the net in the club’s last three matches.

 

Focus tilted to Champions League qualifiers

Having been crowned champions of Cameroon in the women’s first division championship, Lekie Filles now have their attention tilted towards qualifiers for the 2023 CAF Women’s Champions League.

The team will begin its continental assignment with the Central African sub-regional qualifiers.

They will compete with other clubs from Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Chad and the Central African Republic.

It will be the club’s maiden continental duty in its duty.

The Lekie Filles team which will be in its maiden continental assignment; will be looked upon to have a decent show at the event after all of Cameroon's representatives all failed to shine. 

Louves MINPROFF which gave Cameroon its debut appearance in the event were butted out in the first round of the qualifiers in the inaugural CAF Champions League in 2020. Awa Filles suffered the same fate in 2021 before falling in the sub-regional final last year.
