Littoral Region: 14 arrested over killing of soldiers, biker in Penda Mboko.

At least 14 individuals have been arrested for allegedly being authors of the May 1 attack that killed three soldiers and a biker in Penda-Mboko, Mbanga Subdivision, Moungo Division of the Littoral Region.

News of the suspects' arrest was made public by the Legion Commander of the Littoral Region, Col. Pierre Aime Bikele. The Gendarmerie boss of the Littoral Region, is quoted as having said the suspects were arrested during a crackdown carried out by officers under his command.

Col. Bikele is further quoted to have indicated that following the killings, they opened up investigations. He is said to have identified those who committed the act as being Amba fighters, who crossed in from neighbouring Muyuka Subdivision, Fako Division of the South West Region.

According to the Commander, officers under his units, during the operation neutralised a self-styled separatist commander named General Canavaro. He said Canavaro was the main planner of the attack.

To recall that the soldiers were ambushed on Labour Day by suspected Amba fighters while they were onboard a motorcycle. The rider of the motorcycle was also killed.

The soldiers had contacted the biker to transport them from Nkongsamba to the Cameroon Development Corporation, CDC, Penda Mboko Camp. It was on their way that the suspected Amba fighters launched the attack.

A soldier had on the day of the attack been quoted as having said the suspected Amba fighters ambushed and shot their victims to death on the spot.

The respondent then is said to have also indicated that one of the officers gave up the ghost as he battled to alert colleagues.

To note that separatist attacks have been recurrent in border localities bordering the North West and South West Regions in the West and Littoral Regions.

Since 2017, when the crisis in the North West and South West Regions went deadly, authorities have remained resilient in putting such incursions under control.
