FIBA Africa Zone IV presidency: FECABASKET backs Eric Niat’s candidacy.

The Cameroon Basketball Federation, FECABASKET, has said it is backing the candidacy of its first vice president, Eric Aimé Niat for the top job of Africa Zone IV of the International Basketball Federation, FIBA.

Niat is said to have expressed the wish to compete to occupy the position of the highest office of the FIBA in Central Africa, which is known as Zone IV.

FECABASKET in a statement on its official Facebook page, accompanied by the picture of Eric Niat, said they are happy to support the candidacy of its first vice for the post of president for the Zone 4 FIBA Africa.

“Let’s move together, Eric Niat for President”, reads a message which accompanies the photo of the sports administrator and political figure.

It should be noted that the 2023 General Assembly election(2023-2027), was one of the main topics of discussions during the FIBA Africa Central Board which held in December 2022 in Maputo, Mozambique.

It was resolved that elections for a number of positions, including FIBA Africa President, Presidents of FIBA Africa seven Sub-zones, Treasurer will take place from June 9 to 10, 2023.

The FIBA Africa Zone IV covers Cameroon, Congo, Chad, Equatorial Guinea, Sao Tome and Principe, Democratic Republic of Congo and Gabon.

Eric Niat, the sports administrator, politician…

The 49-year-old born in Buea, South West Region is the son of current Senate President, Marcel Niat Njifenji.

He currently occupies the position of first vice president of the Cameroon Basketball Federation, a position he has been holding since December 2022 when fresh elections were held at FECABASKET.

He is said to have actively participated in the organisation of the first edition of the Afrobasket Women’s competition in 2015 in Cameroon.

Besides being a lover and promoter of basketball, Eric Niat is also into politics.

Niat is currently Mayor of Bangangte Council in Nde Division of the West Region. He was voted Mayor in 2021.

Before he became the municipal magistrate for Bangangte, he had occupied the posts of 4th Deputy Mayor from 2013 to 2019 and then 3rd Deputy Mayor from 2019 to 2020 in the same council.

Eric Niat is also into several businesses. In 2017, he created the Black Platinium communication agency based in Douala and became it’s Associate General Manager in charge of Finance and Administration.

Eric Aimé Niat studied at the University of Massachusetts in Boston , United States of America where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts and Sciences in Political Science in 2001.

That same year, he was admitted as an intern at the Permanent Representation of Cameroon to the United Nations in New York, where he worked with the UN Secretary General and Nobel Peace Prize winner , Koffi Annan . 

In 2013, he decided to get involved in the social, humanitarian and political fields. 

Spokesperson and member of the NIAT Foundation, he has also been involved for several years in providing educational support to underprivileged children.

He is holder of Knight of the Cameroonian Order of Merit
