SW Peace, Dev’t Forum opens in Buea today.

The South West Peace and Development Forum will be held today in Buea, organisers have said. The forum, placed under the patronage of the Prime Minister, Head of Government, Chief Dr Joseph Dion Ngute, is fronted by the South West Regional Assembly.

The two-day forum, which ends tomorrow Saturday, will regroup elite and sons and daughters from the different corners of the Region. Participants during the come-together will brainstorm and develop strategies to consolidate peace and bring about sustainable development in the Region.

 

The platform, also opened to ex-separatist fighters from the Region, will witness six key presentations on specific themes selected by resource persons. According to the President of the South West Regional Assembly, Bakoma Zacheus Elango, they intend to use the platform to gather ideas that will enable sustain the achievement registered since the start of their mandate over two years ago. 

 

“We are aware of certain challenges we face, and therefore we have decided to convene this forum that we have named ‘South West Peace and Development Forum’,” Bakoma said in a recent interview granted the state broadcaster, CRTV.

 

“We have already achieve something and we aim to consolidate it,” the Regional Assembly President added, while reiterating that “failing to come to an agreement and working together may lead to unpleasant consequences, which we wish to avoid”. 

 

Regional dev’t plan in view

 

It is expected that during the Buea gathering, discussions on and the formulation of a regional development plan for South West may be amongst the burning issues on the agenda.

 

Going by Bakoma Zacheus, the Regional Assembly is envisaging three main priority areas, notably, health, education and infrastructure.

 

“We want to improve on the health situation of our population by ensuring that they have easy access to basic health amenities. Education is very important for the growth of an economy and secondary education is that determining stage where you shape the mind-set of students,” Bakoma explained. 

 

“There is need for roads to facilitate transportation. As you know, where there is a road, development follows,” the Assembly boss mentioned, before stating that “we think that if we appropriately handle these areas, it will change the lives of the population”.

 

Meanwhile, the rally in Buea will provide an avenue for population from the grass root to ask questions and get clarification on varied subject matters that concerns the region.
