Bamenda journalists stage protest, demand justice for murdered colleague.

Journalists in Bamenda, chief town of the North West Region, have staged a peaceful protest across major streets, demanding justice for their murdered colleague, Anye Nde Nsoh. The young and upcoming journalist was killed Sunday May 7, by suspected Amba fighters.

The protest staged yesterday was led by the Bamenda Chapter President of the Cameroon Association of English-speaking Journalists, CAMASEJ, Muma Jude, alongside the National Secretary General of CAMASEJ, Wanchia Cynthia. Also present were members of Cameroon Journalists Trade Union, CJTU.

The journalists marched with placards carrying varied messages from City Chemist Roundabout to Ntarinkon. They had a brief stop where their colleague was killed.

Some of the placards carried messages, some of which read: "Stop the war”, “Justice for Anye”, “Stop killing journalists”, “Journalism is not a crime" and many others.

While at the spot where Nsoh was killed, a minute of silence was observed in his memory. The journalists then continued to the family residence of the late Nsoh.

CAMASEJ Bamenda Chapter President, Muma Jude, said the protest was to send a message to the perpetrators that enough is enough.

"We started mourning since Sunday evening when we learned that our brother and colleague, Anye Nde Nsoh, was brutally killed. We didn't have the opportunity to meet as a press family because the following day was Monday, so today Tuesday we thought it wise to first send a strong message to the perpetrators on acts like these, not only on journalists, but the entire population. Nobody has the right to take away another's life," Muma warned.

While on the streets, the journalists were joined by other individuals who added their voices to the demand for justice for killed Anye Nde Nsoh.

“We thought that it was going to be just a CAMASEJ affair, but people left their work places and joined us. We are now sure that the perpetrators have watched us because we are in pain. We are on this note saying that it should not happen again to a journalist or any other person," Muma added.

Nsoh, who was West and North West Bureau Chief of The Advocate, was killed at a drinking spot at Che Street in Bamenda. The young journalist met his untimely death with a microphone in his hand while animating at a snack bar. Details of his funeral arrangements were still sketchy as at press time last night.
