After online campaign against poor services: Minister summons ART, MTN, Orange officials for urgent meeting.

The Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, MINPOSTEL, Minette Libom Li Likeng, has summoned officials of the Telecommunication Regulatory Board, ART, Orange and MTN telecommunications companies for an emergency meeting.

The move comes days after several Cameroonians led by celebrities took to social media platforms to stage a protest against poor services offered by the country’s leading telecommunications companies.

According to letters circulated Wednesday and addressed to heads of the various telecoms companies, the meeting is scheduled to take place today at the conference room of the ministry of Posts and Telecommunications in Yaounde.

The meeting to be chaired by Minister Libom Li Linkeng is said to have “consumer protection” as major item on the agenda.

The meeting, we gathered, comes after a two hour campaign initiated by some Cameroonian celebrities and influencers to put their phones on flight mode Monday April 24.

These celebrities had called on Cameroonians to put their phones on flight mode from 12noon to 2pm in protest. The motive of the campaign, they said, was to decry the poor quality of services provided by the said telecommunication companies in the country.

The network providers concerned in the campaign were MTN and Orange. After the campaign Monday, there were mixed opinions as to the impact of what such an action had on the people or on the companies involved.

The today’s emergency meeting on the issue comes as a consolation to initiators of the campaign. It is now left to be seen what will emerge from the meeting.
