2024 official examination session: Minister Nalova Lyonga launches practicals for Sports & Physical Education.

The Minister of Secondary Education, Prof Nalova Lyonga, has officially flagged off practicals for Sports and Physical Education for the 2024 official examination session organised in the country.

The exercise was launched countrywide during an event staged in Baham, Upper Plateaux Division of the West Region. The launching ceremony took place Monday, April 22.

This was in the presence of the Minister of Sports and Physical Education, Prof Narcisse Mouelle Kombi, and the Governor of the West Region, Awa Fonka Augustine.

It was disclosed that the joint visit of the members of government was initiated to emphasise the importance of sports and physical education in the educational system.

The visit, it was also said, underlined government's commitment to promoting a well-rounded education for the youth of the nation.

The ministers said sports and physical education play a vital role in the development of students, not only in terms of physical fitness but also in promoting discipline, teamwork and character building.

Speaking during the launch, Minister Nalova Lyonga highlighted the pivotal role sports plays in the life of students. She urged authorities to ensure that students take the exercise seriously.

The minister explained that: “…it was normal for us to come and see how students take their physical examination very importantly, because in Cameroon, we do believe that students should do both physical and academic exercises. Here, we have a combination of both for the students. That is what we want to see. We want to see our students combining these two to be able to be happy. Those who are doing sports, we believe they are the ones who bring happiness to the institution. We hope everybody can be busy with sports and make the whole atmosphere in the school very conducive”.

She then stated that: “All schools should attempt to have a budget which will take care of physical areas where these children can practice sports. As you can see, some of the playgrounds are not adequate for any sports activity. We don’t want students to wound themselves because they are doing sports. That is why we are here to make sure that the students take sports very seriously”.
